The luscious sweet wines of Constantia were famous throughout the world during the 18th century.  This tradition of excellence has been revived in recent years in the Constantia wine region, which lies on the cool, breezy slopes of Constantia Mountain.

Oak-shaded Groot Constantia, granted to Governor Simon van der Stel in 1685, is the grande dame of South Africa's wine industry.  The beautiful old estate is best known for its majestic manor house (now a museum), a thatched and gabled homestead built in the classic style of Cape Dutch architecture.

Klein Constantia nearby is famed for its superlative wines and has an award winning modern cellar and tasting centre.  Buitenverwachting (beyond expectation) is another historic estate that has been meticulously restored to its original splendour.
