Location: South Africa » Western Cape » Cape Town » Cape Town » Camps BayCamps bayCamps bay is the most stunning location in the Cape Town Reg Camps Bay is one of the most popular and most expensive suburbs in Cape Town. The stunning location of Camps Bay at the foot of the majestic Twelve Apostles, a mountain range belonging to the Table Mountain range, and its proximity to the centre of town, via the spectacular Kloof Nek road is the reason to its popularity. Camps Bay is the place for urban beach life. The fine white sand is - especially over the weekends and during the holidays - packed with young people. The sea is, due to the protected position in the bay, quite calm and - in summer - good for swimming. At the southern end, there is a seawater pool. Camps Bays beach promenade is lined with cafés, bistros, discotheques and restaurants. These are mostly excellent, specialised in Mediterranean or sea food and Sushi. All of them are usually visited by many people in the evenings. Camps Bay is a very trendy suburb; people come here to be seen, to meet other people over a good meal or just for a glass of wine or a cappuccino. The beach population of neighbouring Clifton also comes to Camps Bay for evening entertainment, because Clifton itself is too narrow for a promenade. Instead, it boasts the best beaches, lying well protected in small rocky bays. Luxurious apartment houses hang on the mountain slopes. The real estate prices are the highest in South Africa. Even the smallest flat costs millions of Rands. Originally known as ‘Die Baay van von Kamptz (1778), Camps Bay has a permanent holiday atmosphere and the palm-lined beachfront boasts excellent coffee shops, cafes and restaurants and has wind protected, grassed picnic area alongside the main road. With it’s wide sandy beach and tidal pool, Camps Bay is very popular with sunbathers and picnickers. HISTORICAL VIEW Round House Built as hunting lodge for Lord Charles Somerset during the early 1800’s, the building today houses a fine restaurant offering spectacular views over Camps Bay Bellsfontein Kramat An Islamic shrine to Nureelmobeen, a Moslem holy man. ATTRACTIONS Camps Bay Beach With the back of Table Mountain, the Twelve Apostels and the cable way as backdrop, this is a spacious, popular family beach. Be warned there is a strong surf and no resident lifeguard – a rescue helicopter however patrols the area regularly. Due to it’s exposure to the wind, the beach is unsuitable for paddleskiers and surfers. There are shops, restaurants, a hotel, a chemist, banks and a police station in close proximity to the beach.
